Origins
During prehistoric times the ancestors of modern Koreans survived by hunting and gathering wild food. Around 10,000 years ago, they began to grow crops such as millet and beans. Baekje included elements of Confucian thought into its state beliefs and made the male centered concept of filiopiety an official doctrine in 1390 CE. Goryeo, who ruled from 918 to 1392 CE established the Hangul alphabet based on the shapes made by the mouth during pronunciation. Development in Korea
The Korean peninsula was habitable from Neolithic times onwards. This article examines developments to date by analyzing five phases of Korea's political development including the illiberal democratic period (1945-60) democratic authoritarianism (1961-72) and authoritarian exceptionalism (1972-87), democratic paternalism (1987-2001), and participatory democracy (2002 to the present). This article also highlights the most important factors that are shaping these processes.
Creationism in Korea
In South Korea, 26 percent of the population is Christian. The creationists have been successful in promoting their views to this population. A survey conducted in 2009 found that nearly a third of respondents did not believe in the theory of evolution. Of the respondents, 41% stated that there was insufficient scientific evidence to support evolution 39% claimed that the theory did not align with their beliefs and 17% said it was difficult to understand. This level of doubt is similar to that in the United States, where a majority of people do not accept that humans evolved from less advanced types of life.
In the past, the anti-evolution campaign in Korea was focused on the education of students and in bringing Christ to them. A significant rise in interest in creation science began in 1980, with the inauguration of a four-day seminar during the World Evangelization Crusade in Seoul which included Drs. Henry Morris and Duane Gish of ICR as the main speakers. This event was attended by an impressive crowd of scientists, professors, and church leaders.
The event's success led to the formation of the Korea Association of Creation Research on January 31st in 1980. The inaugural event was widely reported in the national press, including The Korea Times and Chosun Ilbo and also was well-received by the public.
KACR began publishing a monthly newsletter, CREATION, which reported on its activities and published articles about scientific evidence for creationism. It also translated several slides and film strips from ICR, as well as a few books on creationism that were published outside of Korea. KACR members lectured throughout the country at universities and churches.
One instance of a KACR success story was at the KAIST university in Seoul. Students at KAIST in Seoul were fascinated by creationism that they raised money and secured funding to build an enlightened museum on campus.
In addition to its public activities, KACR publishes a bimonthly news magazine called CREATION, which covers topics in the field of creation science, and it has hosted a series of lectures by ICR staff. It also has an organization of local branch offices that give talks and seminars to children and community groups.
The evolution of South Korea
In the latter part of the nineteenth century and into the early twentieth century, Korea began to adopt an increasingly Westernized lifestyle. The traditional Korean dress, the hanbok, was replaced with miniskirts, and other fashion elements from abroad. Similar to the way traditional Korean music styles were replaced with modern jazz and rock and roll. In this period the samulnori, or masked dance-dramas, were loved by the public. These dramatic pieces were performed to the beat of shaman drummers as well as other instruments.
Korea's new development paradigm is being developed in the aftermath of the economic crisis. The main challenge for the new regime is the balance between state-led economic policies as well as market-based ones. It also involves changing the incentives, monitoring, and disciplining policies that shaped the pre-crisis system. These issues are discussed in Chapters 3 and 4.
